Mahjong, also known as ‘mah-jongg’ and ‘majiang’, is an ancient Chinese game that is played with four players and involves tiles, with each person striving to assemble a winning combination. It is particularly popular in Indonesia, where there is a considerable amount of diversity in the rules for the game. Generally, the game is played with 144 Chinese domino tiles, with courtroom-themed characters and symbols representing the different pieces. Players are assigned a predetermined number of tiles, depending on the rules of the game. After a dealer has been chosen, the players then build their stacks by taking turns to draw tiles and discard those they don’t need. When a player has four sets of tiles - three of a kind and one pair - they then ‘call’ Mahjong and can then win the round by discarding the final tile.
